KOLKATA: A 28-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman died of dengue in Kolkata on Tuesday and Wednesday, even as hospitals reported a spike in admissions.
Souvik Basak (28), a resident of Uddalika housing complex on EM Bypass, passed away at Medica Superspecialty on Tuesday, while Barnali Roy (31), admitted to the same hospital, died the next day.
Basak was hospitalized on October 7 with high fever.

His condition remained stable for the next four days but it suddenly worsened on October 11, leading to his death in six hours. His death certificate mentioned "severe dengue shock" as a cause of death. Roy was hospitalized on October 5 with dengue and anaemia. Her condition didn't improve despite a week's treatment, said sources.
Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday announced several anti-dengue measures, including restrictions on constructions to prevent accumulation of water. Hakim asked the KMC buildings department to serve notices on developers who had been allowing water to accumulate at sites."We will issue notice to errant developers to clean up the sites. If the order is flouted, we will revoke building sanctioned plan," he said.
